OTRS CE 6 Critical Header Injection Flaw Enables User Impersonation in CGI Environments

Unauthenticated attackers can impersonate users in OTRS Community Edition 6 by injecting crafted HTTP headers in CGI or mod_perl environments.

Key points

  • The flaw is rated CVSS 9.4 Critical by the National Vulnerability Database.
  • It affects OTRS Community Edition 6 and earlier versions using HTTP Basic Auth.
  • OTRS 7 and later are immune due to architectural changes in their web stack.

A critical authentication bypass vulnerability has been identified in OTRS Community Edition 6 and prior releases. The flaw allows remote attackers to impersonate valid users without possessing any credentials.

What happened

The National Vulnerability Database assigned CVE-2026-93582 a severity score of 9.4, classifying it as critical. The issue stems from how OTRS Community Edition 6 handles HTTP Basic Authentication modules in specific web server configurations. According to the NVD record, the software accepts authenticated usernames from the REMOTE_USER or HTTP_REMOTE_USER environment variables. In deployments using CGI or mod_perl, web servers often map incoming HTTP request headers to corresponding HTTP_* environment variables.

An unauthenticated attacker can exploit this behavior by sending a crafted Remote-User request header. This header is exposed to the application as HTTP_REMOTE_USER. When HTTP Basic Authentication is configured as the backend, OTRS trusts this value as a pre-authenticated identity. The system skips additional password verification steps entirely. Consequently, an attacker can access the Generic Interface as an existing agent or customer user. This impersonation requires no knowledge of actual account credentials.

OTRS 7 and subsequent versions are not affected by this attack vector. These newer releases use Mojolicious/Hypnotoad, which does not expose arbitrary request headers through the environment in the manner required for exploitation. The vendor removed the unused HTTP_REMOTE_USER fallback in newer code as a security-hardening measure, even though the supported REMOTE_USER mechanism requires validation through a configured SSO shared secret. The vulnerability specifically impacts OTRS Community Edition 6.x and products based on this edition.

Why it matters

Successful exploitation grants the attacker privileges corresponding to the impersonated account. An attacker acting as an agent may access confidential information or modify data and configuration settings. The risk level depends on the permissions of the target user account. Organizations using OTRS CE 6 with HTTP Basic Authentication in CGI or mod_perl environments are exposed. The flaw allows bypassing authentication controls that are typically considered secure. This could lead to unauthorized data access or system modification without triggering standard login alerts.

What to watch

  • Monitor web server logs for unusual Remote-User header patterns.
  • Check if OTRS CE 6 is deployed with CGI or mod_perl backends.
  • Verify whether HTTP Basic Authentication is the primary login method.
  • Assess the privilege levels of accounts exposed to the Generic Interface.

What to do and how to stay safe: OTRS

  • Restrict access to OTRS interfaces using network-level firewalls or IP whitelisting.
  • Audit web server configurations to ensure attacker-controlled headers are not mapped to environment variables.
  • Plan migration to OTRS 7 or later versions once the vendor provides an update or migration path.
